'Park finished the season with a resounding 45-7 victory over bottom
club Altrincham Kersal to secure their status in the league.
After 3 consecutive wins to drag themselves out of the relegation zone
Park turned up for this game in good spirits with six substitutes for
the second consecutive week. They even managed to spend almost an hour
before the game warming up, which unfortunately had a detrimental effect
on some players as Andy Donnelly and Mike Rogers then seemed too tired
to do anything during the match!
The first half seemed a tense affair and after some dominant
performances from the pack in recent weeks, the scrummage struggled to
make an impact this week. Park started off keeping good possession
however whether through nerves or over elaboration the attack seemed
fairly ineffective and Kersal proved they weren't there to make up the
numbers and the Kersal fly half kept Park pegged back with the boot and
with what was their first and possibly only meaningful attack of the
half Kersal scored a converted try to take a shock 7-0 lead.
This seemed to spur Park into action and whilst the game was a generally
scrappy one at this point some good work by Mike Beer pulled the scores
back to 7-5 and soon after Mike Benson scored a try, converted by Si
Evans to give Park a 12-7 lead at half time.
Park reshuffled at half time, introducing Hugh Fry to Full Back, Warren
Duffy to Fly Half and in spite of a totally inept performance by Michael
Rogers, who fumbled and stumbled his way through his worst performance
of the season, Matt Chandler was brought into the Back Row at the
expense of Mike Benson.
Parks recent attacking flair seemed to kick in and some good handling
moves and support play led to Park scoring 33 unanswered points in the
second half with try's coming from Hugh, Warren and Andy Simms. The try
of the game however came from none other than Terry Zindi upon his
return to the team. He rounded 4 of the opposition to score a 90 metre
breakout try. Clearly his time off hasn't affected his nose for the line
and his searing pace.
This performance capped what has been a season of extreme highs and lows
for the 3rd team. The season started with a team of 7 or 8 lads
receiving a 100-5 thumping at the hands of Sale and continued with Park
playing with anything from 10 to 13 players for most of the games in the
opening half of the season and seemingly odds on for relegation.
Credit must be given at this point to the work of Del Trotter, who took
it upon himself to organise the team and created a better atmosphere
around the 'squad'. Del's hard work and the arrival of such players as
Tim Reid and Ally Williams to name a couple as well as the likes of
James Cooley who has improved week on week led to a gradual improvement
in performances culminating in 4 straight wins to avoid relegation.
Possibly the most pleasing aspect of the Kersal win was that most
players seemed disappointed to not have scored 50 points. An indication
of the progress made thanks to the work of Del and the settled squad
that has developed.
Park 3's have used in excess of 100 players this season, however it is
no coincidence that in the last 4 wins the starting 15 barely changed
throughout and we can only hope that the team ethic and the camaraderie
that has emerged by the end of the season can be carried forward to next
season because if we can then we will surely be battling at the other
end of the table next season, and we can only hope that the finish to
the season has only acted as a spur to the players responsible for it to
prove that they are as good as their recent form shows.
Well done lads!'
