Broughton Park 47 v 7 Vale of Lune, Dec 2nd.Park began this match exactly where they finished last week's game at Tyldesley, quickly on to the ball and causing mayhem in the opposition's half of the pitch resulting in two fine tries coming from No8 John Clifford and winger Marlon Miller, Ronan O'Brien missing the first of the conversions narrowly and then whilst being treated for a blood injury Steve O'Connor was successful with the second attempt. Park led 12pts to nilVale were finding it very difficult to stop this constant pressure and on the tenth minute from a solid scrum inside Vale's half saw John Clifford pick up from the base and a well timed pass to scrum half Steve Elliot who made good ground to find Flanker Peter MacMahon on his inside who ran in the third of Park's tries between the posts. An easy conversion for Steve O'Connor gave Park a comfortable lead of 19pts to nil. The continuity between the home side's forwards and backs was excellent to watch and the confidence in this area of play is now coming to the fore. The twenty third minute of play saw Park awarded a penalty in Vale's twenty two, quick thinking by scrum half Steve Elliot tapped and went to find that man again, John Clifford on hand to take a well timed pass to crash over for his second try of the match. A good conversion from Ronan O'Brien gave Park a 26pts to nil lead. The home crowd did not have to wait long for the next score to come and again it was that man Clifford finding his way over the line for his third try of the game, again good kicking by Ronan O'Brien saw Park move even further ahead by 33pts to nil. Park continued to apply the pressure and from a good set scrum and the ball being put through the hands quickly found Ronan O'Brien joining the line at pace up the blind side and with a lovely dummy, stepped inside his opposite number to score a very good try and conversion to take Park's score out of sight to 40pts to nil at the turn around. With a strong wind now against them Park spent much of the second half defending their line, and with lots of stout tacking by every man jack they managed to keep Vale at bay, however with good pressure in their defensive tackling Vale spilt ball which Park latched onto and in the 15th minute of the second half saw Man of the Match Peter MacMahon on hand to race to the line and score between the post to give Ronan an easy conversion kick. Park 47pts-Vale nil. Replacements were made seeing Simon Evens taking over from John Clifford, Mark Flynn from Skipper Andy O'Grady in the front row and Ben O'Brien for Mike Rainey on the wing. A late try in the dying minutes of the match saw Vale grab a consolation try and conversion to make the final score Park 47pts Vale of Lune 7pts. Coach John Morgan and his team should be congratulated for the way that they tried to keep in the game and we look forward to seeing them later on in the season. This game was won by a polished performance from the whole team, excellent scrummaging form the front five (two against the head) some great lines of running from our backs, John Knight giving a faultless display of being everywhere and putting in some fine tackles, Guy Barlow keeping up his menacing tactics at tight head and having another great game, Andy O'Grady giving his opposite number another hard after noon in the art of scrummaging, there is, as I said last week, better to come from this team lets hope we can take it to the Park for next weeks Cup game against Lymm at home. 2-30pm K.O. please get down and support Kevin, Jimmy and the lads.
