North 2 West League 7th Oct.

Winnington Park 16 v 6 Broughton Park.

In the first minute of the game 'Park took the ball into contact but the Winnington forwards pushed the 'Park forwards off the ball and drove deep into 'Park's 22. To stop the drive 'Park gave away a penalty which was put over making the score 0 - 3 after 1 minute. From the restart 'Park had a penalty which was missed.

'Park had a lineout on the Winnington 22 but failed to throw the ball in early enough. Winnington took the ball upfield and 'Park gave another penalty away. Winnington drove the ball into 'Park's 22 and after a couple of drives sent the ball out to the winger who scored in the corner. 8 - 0.

'Park, through Ronan O'Brien, did get on the scoreboard after 20 mins with a purple patch of running Rugby which Winnington could only stop by giving a penalty away. 8- 3.

On the half hour after good work from the 'Park backs, 'Man of the Match' out-half Steve O'Connor was in a position to drop a goal and did so with consummate ease. 8 - 6.

Winnington had a chance to add to their score but the penalty hit the post and full back Ronan O'Brien ran the ball out of defence and put in a telling kick to touch.

Just after half time 'Park gave a penalty away in the Winnington Park 22. Some of 'Park's ill disciplined forwards told the referee what they thought so the referee penalised them another 10 yards. From the resulting penalty Winnington drove well into 'Park's half and after a few phases of play sent the ball out to the winger who scored in the corner.

'Park's ill discipline in recent games has caused them much loss of ground leading to opportunities for the opposition get in range and score points. This ill discipline will have to be cut out if many games are to be won this season.

From yet another of the many penalties which 'Park had given away Winnington were within range to put a kick over making the final score 16 - 6.

A game from which 'Park can take many positives from the way that the backs played and the way that the guys played who came in for the many injuries to the squad.

The biggest negative is the ongoing ill discipline of giving away far too many penalties and even worse talking back to the referee. They must learn that the Referee is always right even if he is wrong!

The game is about territory and penalties just give away territory. The penalty count on Saturday was about 80% to 20% against 'Park.
