Lancashire Trophy 2nd Sept.

Liverpool St Helens 15 v 9 Broughton Park

This game was a repeat of last season's first round game which 'Park won easily going onto to just lose out to Leigh in the final.

This season's first round game started badly when the large physical presence of 2nd Row Mark Poole, did not get to the ground in time, so 'Park's scrummage and organisation was disrupted.

From the kick-off 'Park gave good possession away by having some kicks to touch charged down and others going straight into the hands of the opposition. From one kick in the first 5 minutes Liverpool took the ball into contact and a Liverpool forward burst through to outstrip the 'Park defence to score under the posts, with the conversion the score was 7- 0 after 5 mins.

'Park came back into the game and put Liverpool under pressure for long periods in the first half. Liverpool gave a penalty away and Ronan O'Brien just hit the post. 'Park were pressing the Liverpool line but the Liverpool defence held out only for them to give another penalty under the posts. This time Ronan put it over to make the score 7 - 3 at half time.

The second half started where the first left off with 'Park pressing the Liverpool line and Liverpool having to give away penalties to keep them out. Two were put over for 'Park to take the lead 9 - 7.

After the pressure for the first 30 mins of the 2nd half 'Park seemed to run out of steam and Liverpool came more into the game and kept possession of the ball. 'Park were finding it difficult to get hold of the ball and were giving away penalties in their attempts. One of the penalties was near enough to put over making the score 10 - 9 to Liverpool.

A kick ahead from Liverpool went to winger Adam Middlehurst but the support was slow to arrive and 'Park had to give away a penalty to stop the drive. From the scrummage and the resulting maul Liverpool drove over for an unconverted try.

Score at full time 15 - 9 to Liverpool.

'Park had more possession and territory for large parts of the game but could not turn this into points.
