South Lancs & Cheshire 1, April 8th 2006 Broughton Park 73pts v 5pts Warrington With conditions on the day being tricky, a swirling wind and at times driving rain, the possibility of 'Park slipping up against the leagues bottom club was a distinct possibility. In the first 10 mins of the game 'Park allowed 2 gilt edged chances to score tries go a begging but Tom Mapp steadied the nerves of the 'Park players by converting a penalty to give the home side a 3 point advantage. It wasn't until the 22min of the game that 'Park scored the 1st of 12 tries. The try itself was a combination of forwards and backs working together to produce the end result. The forwards won the ball on the half way line and drove the ball forward putting the Warrington defence on the back foot and with the ball being released at the correct moment Simon Verbickas threw a long, cut out pass to Tom Foden who scorched into the corner for the 1st of his two tries. The half time score of 32 points to 5 in 'Parks favour, emphasised the dominance that 'Park now had. With the forwards securing quality ball the backs were scything through the Warrington defence. Maybe the best try of the season was scored after 36 minutes when once again forwards and backs combined to produce a score. After a series of driving mauls when the 'Park forwards gained 30 meters the ball was released to the backs. With Tom Mapp and Tom Foden making decoy runs Simon Verbickas arced round a bemused Warrington defence to feed Ronan O'Brien, coming onto the ball at pace, who cut the right angle to score out wide. A further 7 tries were scored in the second half as 'Park completely outplayed Warrington. Hooker, Andy Wilson, who was selected as man of the match, along with the rest of the forwards were the initial reason 'Park ran out such convincing winners. The platform that the forwards created allowed the 'Park backs to cut loose and show, to all who watched, how ruthless they can be when it comes to putting points on the board. The result has almost guaranteed the league championship and promotion for Broughton Park. With a massively superior points difference over 'Parks nearest rival it would take something quite extraordinary to deprive 'Park of the League Championship. Director of Rugby, John O'Grady, was full of praise for the team at the end of the game saying, "Our aim this year was to secure promotion and it looks as though we have succeeded. One league game to go at Sandbach and with the team we have, who to a man have given everything to gain promotion, I see no reason why we shouldn't finish off the season in style."
