After 2nd half domination, 'Park hang on for Victory.
Anselmians were a newly promoted side so were an unknown quantity. Were
they passing through onto higher leagues or consolidating their
promotion? After less than 5 minutes it appeared that they were more than
just consolidating their position, when with a rolling maul which sent
'Park's makeshift pack backwards. The ball was quickly fed to the
lightning fast Anselmians winger who scored in the corner. An excellent
conversion from the touchline made the score 7 - 0 after 5 mins.
In the first 20 mins both sides were turning ball over and squandering
good possession. 'Park's makeshift pack were having difficulties in the
scrummage and the rucks and mauls.
Anselmians missed a very kickable penalty on 20 minutes when the 'Park
backs strayed offside. 5 minutes later Anselmians were adjudged offside
at a maul and 'Park's sixth kicker of the season Joe Wykes put it over to
make the score 3 - 7. On 35 minutes Joe repeated the feat although off
the post to make the score 6 - 7.
'Park were coming more into the game with veteran prop and former England
Colt John Russell having adjusted to the pace now having a storming game.
'Park were now keeping possession and in one phase of play the ball went
through many hands to reach centre Stuart Coakeley who, with a two man
overlap, chose to go himself and score under the posts. Joe Wykes
converted to make the score 13 - 7 after 37 minutes.
'Park's backs had a purple patch sending the ball from wing to wing and
running Anselmians ragged. No. 8 Matt Sheen was stopped short of the line
but the ball came back and was swung to the opposite corner for full back
Simon Verbickas to score in the corner, making the score 18 - 7 after 20
mins of the 2nd half.
Anselmians came back, seizing on a Broughton Park mistake, but they had
the try disallowed for the winger having a foot in touch.
Half an hour into the 2nd half 'Park won the ball and took it on but
no-one was in support of the ball carrier so the ball was lost and
Anselmians seized the opportunity to score a converted try. 18 - 14
'Park had a player sent off for stamping and were down to 14 men for the
last vital 10 minutes. Park came under sustained pressure for the last
five minutes but held on to win 18 - 14.
