'Park weather the storm to take Victory. 'Park kicked off into the strong wind and, as is usual at the beginning of every half of every game, were under pressure for the first ten minutes, finding it difficult to win any ball. The official seemed reluctant to blow his whistle for infringements and, as usually happens in these situations, players take the law into their own hands so there one or two 'handbags at ten paces' moments in the first 20 mins. Flanker Dave Rodgers was outstanding in his awareness and quick foraging for the ball. Unfortunately a few times he was adjudged to be too quick to get to the ball and was penalised for offside, much to the chagrin of some 'Park spectators well versed in the laws of the game. 'Park weathered the first 10 minute storm and started to win some good ball, however forced passes saw many movements break down and the ball lost. All Hoylake then had to do was bang the ball away down the pitch on the wind. Hoylake, just before half-time, put over a penalty from outside the 22. 3 - 0 and into 1st half injury time. From the kick-off 'Park won the ball and started a driven maul from the Hoylake 22. Despite many shouts of 'truck & trailer' from the opposition spectators the maul was driven over the line for lock Mark Poole to score. Pete Oakes just missed the conversion. At half-time the score was 3 - 5. Hoylake for the first ten minutes were again all over 'Park who struggled to win any ball. Hoylake retaining possession for phase after phase. It was no surprise after gaining much ground, and 'Park missing many first time tackles, that Hoylake scored an unconverted try near the posts. 8 - 5. 'Park again weathered the storm and managed to kick a penalty into touch for a lineout 5 metres from the Hoylake line. A well rehearsed line out move, from which many tries have been scored this season, saw yet again another try, which was not converted. 8 - 10. 'Park were now giving away many penalties which lost ground and kept Hoylake in the game, but generally 'Park were on top particularly in the forwards. Big lock Mark Poole drove through a ruck which should have been Hoylake possession and stole the ball from the Hoylake forwards. The Hoylake backs were up in attacking positions, so a pass from Mark Poole to winger Joe Wykes left Joe with little opposition on his way to the line apart from the Hoylake player chasing across from the other wing. Joe stopped and allowed him to gallop past and then went on to score near the posts. Pete Oakes converted to make the final score 8 - 17. |
