Broughton Park 21 v 28 Leigh. SLCH 1. March 12th , 2005.

'Park let in three long range tries with woeful tackling.

'Park gave an early penalty away for offside in the backs but the opportunity was missed. 'Park were under pressure for the first few minutes and struggled to win any ball and after a few phases of play where Leigh retained the ball they scored a try near the posts which was converted after 6 minutes, 0 - 7.

Two minutes later, almost from the restart, 'Park had a scrummage just outside the Leigh 22. No.8 Ian Maclure fed scrum half Shaun Stirrup who passed to full back Ronan O'Brien to score under the posts. Ronan converted his own try to make the score 7 - 7 after 8 minutes. On 20 minutes after good 'Park pressure a shout from the coaches of "Three points!" encouraged out-half Steve O'Connor to try a drop goal in front of the posts. He was successful, 10 - 7 after 20 minutes. Good kicking from Steve O'Connor and Ronan O'Brien kept putting 'Park in good positions only for mistakes to be made and the ball be lost.

One good phase of play saw the ball reach wing Ben O'Brien who chipped over his opposite number and won the race to touch down in the corner. 18 - 7 after 30 mins.

Two thirds of 'Park's lineout strength was missing through injury and unavailability in Tom Sneezby and John Clifford, so most of the lineout work was left to a single jumper, Jon Knight. It was no surprise therefore that a lineout was eventually lost on a 'Park throw-in where Leigh ran half the length of the pitch from the line-out and the ball was kicked ahead, but Ronan O'Brien caught the ball and relieved the pressure but unfortunately did not make touch. A Leigh player caught the ball but was tackled by a 'Park player who had made no attempt to get himself back onside, he was therefore sin-binned for 10 minutes. Not the situation which 'Park wanted 14 against 15 in such a close game.

Leigh took advantage of the extra man and after a few phases of play and some poor 'Park tackling scored a converted try near the posts. There was no more scoring and at half-time the score was 18 - 14 to 'Park.

After two minutes of the 2nd half Leigh ran the ball from well inside their own half and taking advantage of the extra man, good running, and weak 'Park tackling the ball eventually reached the Leigh full back who scored a converted try under the posts. 18 - 21. After 20 mins 'Park pressure gave them a penalty in front of the posts to make the score 21 - 21 after 20 mins of 2nd half. However Leigh's lively back line again ran well from their own half, taking advantage of some weak tackling, to score a converted try near the posts. 21 - 28 after 29 mins of 2nd half.

For the last 10 mins 'Park applied pressure but on too many occasions spilled the ball in the tackle allowing Leigh to relieve the pressure. The 'Park forwards without Tom Sneasby and John Clifford still did enough to win the game but there was no penetration out wide and missed tackles cost them dear.

'Park now have to hope that they win their remaining games and others lose.
