Sandbach 0 v 23 Broughton Park, Feb 5th '05,
South Lancs and Cheshire League 1

On a cold windless day 'Park played down the slope in the first half but put themselves under pressure by missing touch on many occasions in the first 20 mins. Sandbach fighting against relegation, but only having lost one previous match at home this season, looked very lively. 'Park were without two very large gentleman in top try scorer 2nd row Mark Poole and No' 8 John Clifford, so a harder time for the pack was expected. The Sandbach kicker had opportunities to put them in front on three occasions but missed each time. After the first 20 mins storm passed 'Park got into the Sandbach 22 and from a lineout Simon Evans passed to Dave 'Beastie' Rodgers to score under the posts, unfortunately the pass was forward. Sandbach were pressing 'Park back into their own 22 and had a scrummage on 'Park's 22 but 'Park's weakened pack pushed Sandbach off the ball and cleared their lines.

Towards the end of the first half the 'Park pack began to dominate and from a driven maul from the Sandbach 22, hooker Danny Lycett scored near the corner after 32 mins. (0 - 5) Sandbach came back strongly to be awarded another penalty which was again missed. A botched kick out from the 'Park 22, after the penalty miss, allowed Sandbach another penalty which was again missed. Just before half-time 'Park No.8 was sin binned for persistent off-side. 'Park weathered this Sandbach pressure to break out to bring play into the Sandbach 22 in first half injury time. Flanker Tom Sneasby got the ball over the line but could not ground the ball. Half time 0 - 5.

If Sandbach had had a good kicker the score could have been 15 or more points to 5 to Sandbach.

Despite exhortations by the coach Mark Lloyd to make sure kicks went into touch and also not to give penalties away, the first three kicks in the 2nd half missed touch and within a minute Simon Evans was penalised for a high tackle so Sandbach had another kick at goal, which was again missed. The 'Park forwards were now on top and from a driven maul which had been joined by full back Ronan O'Brien and wing Ben O'Brien, Ronan scored a forwards try near the posts, after 8 mins of the 2nd half. Ronan missed the conversion.

After the poor kicking of the first half 'Park's kicks thro' Steve O'Connor and Joe Wykes were now all making good ground and forcing Sandbach back into their own 22.

From a 'Park scrummage on the Sandbach 10m line the ball was spun out to the backs to reach winger Joe Wykes who was able to pass inside to out-half Steve O'Connor, backing up, to score in the corner. 0 - 15 after 12 mins of 2nd half.

'Park were now dominating the scrummages, so a scrummage on the Sandbach 10m line was ominous for Sandbach. From the scrum a driven maul made good ground for loose head prop Andy 'Tank' O'Grady to score just in from the corner. The conversion was missed. 0 - 20 after 30 mins of 2nd half.

'Park were now pounding the Sandbach line but with good defence it did not yield again, however they were forced to give away a penalty which Ronan O'Brien put over in the last minute of the game to make the final score 0- 23.

Wilmslow lost so lose more ground. 'Park stay equal top with Rochdale who they play in their next league game at home on Feb 19th. The next home game is a Lancashire Cup game versus Fleetwood at home on Feb 12th.
