Vagabonds 3 v 21 Broughton Park, Jan 22nd, South Lancs and Cheshire League 1 After 10 mins of pressure, playing into a strong wind, 'Park were awarded a penalty for offside and Steve O'Connor made up for an earlier penalty miss and two kicks charged down to put the kick over. (0 - 3) The score was evened when 'Park gave away a penalty 10 yards outside the 22 making the score 3 - 3 after 15 minutes. 'Park were pressurising the Vagabonds team with many good driven mauls and it was no surprise when Vagabonds gave away a penalty for pulling down a maul. 'Park opted for a scrummage. The scrummage wheeled slightly for flanker Tom Sneezby to pick up and pass to 2nd row Jon Knight who scored near the posts. Steve O'Connor converted to make the score 3 - 10. 'Park had played some of their best controlled rugby of the season in this half but Vagabonds held out to leave the score at 3 - 10 at half time. In the 2nd half 'Park now had the very strong wind with them and with good kicks from Steve O'Connor, continued to keep the Vagabonds in their own half. The 'Park pack were dominant throughout and apart from the odd break away towards the end they were in the Vagabonds 22 for most of the game. After a lot of pressure on the Vagabonds line where Vagabonds defended well, 'Park were awarded a scrum on the 5 metre line. The omens were not good for Vagabonds as 'Park had dominated the set pieces all afternoon. The 'Park pack true to form pushed over the Vagabonds pack for No'8 John Clifford to touch down. The conversion was missed making the score 3 - 15 after 10 mins of the 2nd half. 2mins later Steve O'Connor punished Vagabonds with another penalty for pulling down a maul. (3 - 18) No.8 John Clifford, who was having his best game after an injury, which kept him out the whole of last season, made a good run only to be pulled up a yard short of the line. He was deemed to have offended at the resulting ruck so Vagabonds were able to relieve the pressure only to offend themselves soon after, and Steve O'Connor put over the penalty to make the score 3 - 21 at full time. With top of the table Wilmslow losing, 'Park are now equal top of the table with Leigh and Rochdale. The top four teams are all within 1 point. All the top teams, Leigh, Rochdale & Wilmslow, have to come to Broughton Park in the next few weeks, so promotion is within 'Park's grasp if they win these vital games. |
