Broughton Park v Warrington, Jan 8th. South Lancs & Cheshire League 1.

Result:- Broughton Park 22 v 3 Warrington.

Park pressure pays off!

In their first game since Dec 11th, Broughton Park took the field against dangerous Warrington. The visitors arrived full of confidence having defeated league leaders Wilmslow in their previous game.

The ferocious wind which caused mayhem elsewhere was soon in evidence as Warrington's big forwards pinned 'Park in their 22. With kicking not an option 'Park ran the ball making good yardage only for careless passing to cause breakdowns. Warrington meantime using the strong wind merely kicked for the corners and tried to muscle their way over. 'Park defended well and constant harrying was rewarded by a penaly which took 'Park to their opponents 22 where a well executed line-out move led to an unconverted try by hard working lock Mark Poole (5pts to 0). With Andy Wilson replacing tight head prop Mark Flynn (dislocated shoulder) 'Park continued to play 'keep ball' but the visitors use of the wind enabled them to get near enough to kick a penalty (5pts to 3). 'Park lost flanker Ian Maclure with a knee injury. Replacement Dave Rodgers then scored the try of the match, the ball having moved through six or seven players hands to the line. However the society referee running touch had seen a technical infringement near half-way and the try was disallowed.

In the second half with the wind now behind them 'Park's forwards applied pressure and the half backs kicked for position. The home pack drove hard and were rewarded when Mark Poole scored his second try, which was cooly converted by Steve O'Connor. (12pts to 3).

'Park then had to show their character as a strange incident occurred. Two 'Park back row players were sin-binned while a punching Warrington player was allowed to carry on. Now down to 13 players 'Park actually upped their game and with Mark Poole and Dave Rodgers outstanding actually pressured Warrington into giving away a penalty which Steve O'Connor converted (15pts to 3). During this time a brilliant piece of play by Ronan O'Brien and Joe Wykes nearly brought a try but Ronan's jinking run was stopped just short of the line. When 'Park's two forwards returned Warrington heads dropped and a quick tap penalty by the switched on Dave Rodgers saw him touch down for the final try converted by Steve O'Connor. Man of the match was Mark Poole. A good win for 'Park watched by a sizeable crowd puts the club in contention for a promotion push.
