Historical Note

  • One of the oldest Rugby Clubs in England established in 1882, just one year after the Lancashire County Rugby Union was founded and eleven years after the formation of the national Rugby Football Union.
  • From its establishment in 1882 to location at its present new facility at Hough End in Chorlton, South Manchester in 2004, the Club has used fourteen different grounds mainly in the Salford/Prestwich area but also in South Manchester.
  • The Club began in 1882 with one senior side of 15 players; it now fields four senior sides supported by one Colts (U19), four youth (U13-U17) and four mini (U8-U12) teams; a total involvement of some 220 players each week.
  • Broughton Park F.C. is the City of Manchester's highest placed representative in the Rugby Union Leagues.
    • Illustrious members of the Club include:-

    • Two 'Park players, 2nd row Mike Leadbetter and Open side flanker Tony Neary, were in the North West Counties team which beat the All Blacks 16 points to 14 at Workington in 1972.
    • Four 'Park or ex 'Park players were in the North team which beat the All Blacks 20 points to 9 at Otley in November 1979. Tony Neary openside flanker, Kevin O'Brien full back, Tony Bond centre and Jim Sydall 2nd row. Read an account.
    • Tony Neary, former England Captain and one of England's most capped players and member of the British Lions.
